American actress Meghan Markle was ecstatic when Prince Harry proposed to her at the end of 2017, as she assumed getting married to royalty meant that she was set for life. However, she quickly learned that being engaged to a Prince meant that she would be under intense public scrutiny, and it now appears this has gotten to her in a huge way.
Freedom Daily reported that Markle just shut down all of her social media accounts, with Kensington Palace confirming that the 36 year-old actress has quit Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
“Ms. Markle is grateful to everyone who has followed her social media accounts over the years,” the palace said in a statement. “However, as she has not used these accounts for some time, she has taken the decision to close them.”
This move came as a shock to many as Markle was very active on social media.
“It was the way she built ‘her brand,’” Sky News added of Markle’s now gone social media life. “Sharing her life with her fans and more significantly her views on everything from political participation to racial equality.”
Perhaps the royal family forced Markle to give up her social media accounts as they realized that her being active online could be a big liability for them. The British royal family strives to be politically neutral, so Markle’s vocal anti-Donald Trump presents a big problem for them. They are still reeling from the resurfacing of a 2016 clip in which she blatantly bashed the sitting president.
When asked how the momentum of then-candidate Trump could be slowed down, Markle held nothing back with her response.
“It’s really the moment that I go, we film Suits in Toronto and I might just stay in Canada,” Markle replied. “I mean come on, if that’s reality we are talking about, come on, that is a game changer in terms of how we move in the world here.”
“Yes of course Trump is divisive. Think about just female voters alone,” she continued. “I think it was in 2012, the Republican Party lost the female vote by 12 points. That’s a huge number and with as misogynistic as Trump is and so vocal about it, that’s a huge chunk of it. You’re not just voting for a woman if it’s Hillary because she’s a woman, but certainly because Trump has made it easy to see that you don’t really want that kind of world that he’s painting.”
